KAKAMEGA MAY 26, 2017 (CISA) – The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops-Catholic Justice and Peace Commission (KCCB-CJPC) has warned leaders against politicizing access to food and basic commodities in the country.
“With the ongoing confusion on maize and other basic commodities, it is very sad that our leaders have made this situation political campaign propaganda as Kenyans continue suffering and dying of hunger,” the bishops said in a press statement read by Archbishop Martin Kivuva, Vice-Chairman, KCCB-CJPC.
“The government should give a clear policy statement on the food situation in the country,” added Archbishop Kivuva of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa.
He was speaking in a press briefing at Bishop Stam Pastoral Centre, Kakamega on May 24, at the end of a meeting that brought together CJPC representatives from the 26 Catholic Dioceses of Kenya to review social, political and economic issues affecting the country.
The bishops also said they, “Are deeply saddened,” by the increasing cases of abductions and killings of innocent Kenyans including children and called on the government, “To take immediate action against the perpetrators.”
Following recent terror attacks in some parts of Mandera, Wajir and Garissa CJPC further appealed to the government to prioritize the security of Kenyans and their property despite the ongoing political campaigns.
“We join the rest of the world to condole the families of the people who lost their lives following the terrorist attack in the City of Manchester, United Kingdom. May this act as a reminder to security forces in Kenya and around the world to always remain vigilant to threats of Global Terrorism,” said Archbishop Kivuva.
