LILONGWE, MAY 22, 2018 (CISA)-The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has assured people living with albinism of its full commitment in continued support and protection of their rights and freedom in the country.
“The church loves you and will always stand by people living with albinism and defend them. It is for this reason that the bishops wanted to meet the executive committee of Association of People with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) to express our solidarity with you,” said Archbishop Tarsizio Ziyaye on the behalf of ECM.
The May 16 meeting came about as a result of last month’s arrest of Fr Thomas Muhosha, a catholic priest of the diocese of Zomba who was suspected of murder of a person with albinism in Machinga District, reported amecea news blog.
They reiterated previous statements by Diocese of Zomba, Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) and the ECM which also condemned the murder terming it as a serious violation of the sanctity of life which is also against doctrines of the Catholic Church.
Other representatives of ECM in the meeting were Bishop George Tambala and the Secretary General of ECM Fr Henry Saindi.
In his speech, Boniface Masseh, APAM National Coordinator, commended the support of ECM and further committed to working with them to ensure the rights and freedoms of people living with albinism are maintained.
He however challenged ECM through Catholic Commission for Justice and peace (CCJP) an arm of ECM, to ensure the pending case of murder surrounding the priest is handled with utmost seriousness.
“CCJP could consider coming up with an independent team of co-investigators and co-prosecutors to support the police and the office of Director of public prosecutions,” Massah said.
