NAIROBI, SEPTEMBER 17, 2021 (CISA)-“We wish to sound a loud warning against utterances and attitudes of possible drums of war all over the Country. If unchecked, such utterances and attitudes may spark off election violence during the forthcoming electioneering period,” the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has warned.
In a press conference on September 15 at Russell House in Karen. The prelates cautioned against politically instigated violence propagated by hate speech ahead of the 2022 General Elections.
“It is thus imperative that institutions like the National Cohesion and Integration Commission, IEBC, and security agencies begin to map out hot spots and violence instigators and counter them peacefully in good time and within the confines of the law,” urged the Catholic Bishops.
Conscious of the recent bandit attacks that have displaced hundreds, torched around 50 homes, and stolen more than 500 animals around Ol Moran in Laikipia West Sub-County, the Catholic Bishops of Kenya appealed to the government to provide security to all Kenyans.
“In this regard, we are deeply concerned about the spate of violence taking place in Laikipia, Marsabit, and Kerio Valley – along the border between Baringo and Elgeyo Markwet Counties. This violence has led to needless loss of life, property, and displacement of the people,” said the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops.
The Bishops alluded that there is a clear sign that the violence is a result of a heightened political environment in the country.
“This is not the first time that the areas affected are experiencing armed violence in what seems to be a politically motivated agenda,” they said.
“The spate of anarchy in these areas must be stopped. Residents must be assured of their security. No resources should be spared to restore calm in the disturbed areas,” urged the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops.
