By Wesley Omondi

VATICAN CITY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2024 (CISA) – On September 23, Rt Rev Anthony Ireri Mukobo IMC marked a remarkable milestone, celebrating his 75th birthday as he prepares to retire after decades of unwavering service as the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Isiolo. His journey began as the Vicar Apostolic, a role he embraced for 17 years, followed by a year as the first local ordinary.

Born on September 23, 1949, Bishop Mukobo has dedicated a significant portion of his life to religious service, embarking on a career that spanned over 50 years. His path has been characterized by profound contributions to the local Church, first in the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi as an auxiliary, and most notably in Isiolo, where he has provided leadership since 2006.

Ordained a priest on January 5, 1980, Bishop Mukobo’s ministry took flight, marking the beginning of his impactful service. Throughout the years, he tirelessly spread the Gospel, undertaking various roles before his consecration as a bishop on March 18, 2000. His deep-seated commitment to pastoral care and evangelization paved the way for his subsequent leadership, guiding his mission alongside the Consolata Missionaries.

In 2006, Bishop Mukobo began his tenure in Isiolo, a region with distinct pastoral challenges. As the Apostolic Vicar, he devoted himself to leading the faithful, focusing on expanding the Church’s outreach and meeting the needs of the local community. On February 15, 2023, Pope Francis elevated the Apostolic Vicariate of Isiolo to a diocese, appointing Mukobo as its first bishop—a testament to his steadfast leadership and dedication to the Church’s growth.

Under Mukobo’s guidance, the Catholic Diocese of Isiolo has experienced remarkable advancements in evangelization and infrastructure development. Spanning 25,700 square kilometres, the diocese serves a population of 268,000, with 19% identifying as Catholics. With 15 parishes, 74 educational institutions, and 11 charitable organizations, the diocese stands as a beacon of hope and support for the community.

“The diocese’s pastoral work is supported by 27 diocesan priests, 6 religious priests, 58 religious men and women, and 10 full-time catechists. Many laypeople also play an active role in caring for and supporting Christian communities, contributing significantly to the diocese’s evangelization efforts,” stated Bishop Mukobo.

As he prepares for retirement, he reflects on both the challenges and achievements of his tenure. Now at the canonical age of 75, he is poised to submit his resignation in accordance with the Code of Canon Law (Canon 401, Paragraph 1), looking forward to entrusting leadership to his successor, Coadjutor Bishop Peter Makau IMC.

On May 4, 2024, Pope Francis appointed Rt Rev Peter Munguti Makau (49) as the Coadjutor Bishop of Isiolo, ensuring a seamless transition for the diocese’s future.

As Bishop Mukobo steps into retirement, he leaves a legacy rich in service, growth, and resilience. His contributions to the Church in Isiolo will resonate for years to come, now entrusted to Bishop Peter Makau, who will carry forward the mission he so passionately began.
