QUELIMANE, July 14, 2026 (CISA): Journalists urged to tell the Church’s story with integrity as preparations for the 21st AMECEA Plenary Assembly gather momentum.
NAIROBI, Kenya, July 14, 2026 (CISA) – Archbishop Anthony Muheria of Nyeri has called on Catholic journalists and media professionals to uphold professionalism, creativity and innovation in communicating the mission of the Church as preparations intensify for the 21st Plenary Assembly of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA).
The Archbishop made the remarks during a Catholic Media Breakfast Meeting held at the Allamano Centre, Consolata Shrine, Westlands, Nairobi, bringing together journalists, editors, photographers, digital content creators and communication officers from Catholic and secular media houses ahead of the continental gathering scheduled for July 19 to 26, 2026, at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).
“Let us tell the story of the Church with professionalism, creativity and excellence. Through quality reporting, compelling images and engaging digital content, we have an opportunity to proclaim the Gospel and inspire hope across our region,” Archbishop Muheria said.
The meeting was attended by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) Secretary General, Very Rev. Fr. Jude Waweru, Rev. Fr. Gerald Omunyin of the National Executive Secretariat Commission for Social Communication, priests, religious men and women, members of the Catholic media fraternity and journalists from various media organizations.
Archbishop Muheria urged media practitioners covering the Assembly to work collaboratively in producing accurate, timely and impactful stories that reflect the life and mission of the Church while embracing digital platforms to reach wider audiences.
He also emphasized the importance of placing young people at the centre of the Church’s pastoral mission by listening to their aspirations, accompanying them in faith and empowering them to become witnesses of hope and agents of positive change.
The 21st AMECEA Plenary Assembly will be held under the theme, “AMECEA’s Synodal Journey with Young People: Building Bridges of Communion, Hope, Justice and Good Governance.”
The Assembly will bring together bishops, clergy, religious and lay delegates from the AMECEA region to reflect on the Church’s evangelizing mission, strengthen regional collaboration and explore pastoral responses to the opportunities and challenges facing young people in Africa today.
The media breakfast meeting forms part of the ongoing preparations to ensure comprehensive and coordinated coverage of the Plenary Assembly, with Catholic media expected to provide timely, accurate and faith-centred reporting throughout the week-long event.
