KINSHASA JANUARY 12, 2016 (CISA) – The National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) have announced the establishment of a Monitoring Committee to follow political developments in the Country.
“The task of the Committee is to maintain contact with all the protagonists, to inspire and to boost mutual trust and to encourage initiatives to re-launch the electoral process,” Bishop Nicolas Djomo, President of CENCO said in a statement.
The announcement was made at the conclusion of the meetings held by a special delegation of CENCO on January 11 as part of the national consultations promised by President Joseph Kabila in view of the election deadline, reported Fides.
In the statement, Bishop Djomo of the Catholic Diocese of Tshumbe further thanked the Head of State for representatives of political parties and civil society who participated in the consultations.
“Despite the differences of their respective positions, an expression of democratic freedom, each component, for the sake of our motherland, holds open a window that favours exchanges for the supreme interest of the nation,” said the bishop.
The newly formed monitoring committee comprises of the six Metropolitan Archbishops of the Church in the DRC including the Archbishops of Bukavu, Kananaga, Kinshasa, Kisangani, Lubumbashi, Mbandaka-Bikoro plus the President and the Vice President of CENCO.
