KAMPALA, JULY 23, 2019 (CISA)-President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda on July 21 officially opened the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Symposium of the Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) in Uganda.
The president asked the Church in Africa to help address the issues of low productivity and consumption which is hampering development in Africa.
“The problem you find in families is that we are stuck on two points. One, they still leave in subsistence farming. They only work for the stomach. They don’t know how to work both for the stomach and money. And when they try both, they do so without evaluating the profitability of what they are doing,” he told delegates gathered for Mass at the Catholic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Lubaga,Kampala.
The opening Mass was concelebrated by cardinals, the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, bishops and priests.
SECAM was inaugurated on July 29, 1969 by Pope St. Paul VI in the same venue; Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kampala, during the first ever visit of a Pope to Africa.
The celebrations guided by the theme “Church-Family of God in Africa, Celebrate your Jubilee! Proclaim Meet and Welcome Christ your Saviour” will be part of SECAM 18thPlenary Assembly.
