LOMÉ, APRIL 14, 2026 (CISA) – Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Isaac Jogues Kodjo Agbéménya Gaglo as the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lomé in Togo.
Until his appointment, Archbishop-elect Gaglo had been serving as Bishop of Aného and Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Lomé, which has remained vacant following the sudden death of Archbishop Nicodème Barrigah-Bénissan in August 2024.
The late Archbishop passed away unexpectedly on August 4, 2024, leaving the Metropolitan See without a substantive shepherd, a responsibility that was entrusted to Bishop Gaglo in an interim capacity.
With the new appointment, Bishop Gaglo will assume full pastoral leadership of the Archdiocese of Lomé, bringing to the role decades of priestly and episcopal experience. Consequently, the governance of the Diocese of Aného enters a period of transition following his transfer, with him being appointed as the Apostolic Administrator.
Born on October 7, 1958, in Kpémé in the Diocese of Aného, the Archbishop-elect was ordained a priest on August 9, 1985. He began his ministry as an assistant parish priest in Lomé and also served as a professor at St. Pius X Minor Seminary between 1986 and 1991.
He later pursued advanced studies, obtaining a doctorate in Moral Theology from Innsbruck, Austria, in 1997. Upon his return, he served in pastoral and diocesan leadership roles, including as parish priest and coordinator of family pastoral care from 1998 to 2005, diocesan consultant in 2004, and diocesan administrator of Aného from 2005 to 2007.
On December 3, 2007, he was appointed Bishop of Aného and received episcopal consecration on February 2, 2008. Since 2024, he has been serving as Apostolic Administrator of the Lomé Archdiocese sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis, overseeing the local Church during the vacancy.
