GHANA: President Meets Pope Francis in Visit to Europe

ROME, JULY 25, 2023 (CISA)-As part of his visit to Europe, President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo of Ghana was on July 22 received in audience by Pope Francis.

The president later met His Eminence Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, accompanied by His Excellency Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.

“During the cordial talks, held in the Secretariat of State, the good relations between the Holy See and Ghana were highlighted, and some aspects of the political and socio-economic situation of the country were discussed, especially the collaboration in the fields of education and healthcare,” reads a statement by Holy See Press.

Also during their engagement, problems of peace in the world and security in the countries in West Africa were also discussed alongside aspects of Ghana’s political and socio-economic situation.

“I paid a courtesy call on Pope Francis, the Head of the Catholic Church, the Bishop of Rome and Sovereign of the Vatican City State, at the Vatican in Rome. I was also taken on a tour of the Pontifical Academies of Sciences at the Vatican by its Chancellor, our fellow Ghanian, Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson who has served in this position since 2022,” Said President Akufo-Addo.

His visit to Rome came after visiting Portugal and Italy.
