MALAWI: Pope’s Special Envoy Arrives for Consecration of new Cathedral

LILONGWE, NOVEMBER 4, 2016 (CISA) – Fernando Cardinal Filoni, Vatican’s Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, has arrived in Malawi ahead tomorrow’s consecration of St Joseph the Worker Catholic Cathedral in Karonga Diocese.

Cardinal Filoni will be the main celebrant in the Eucharistic celebration that will take place November 5 arrived in Malawi on November 3.

Pope Francis named Cardinal Filoni his special envoy at the consecration of Karonga’s Cathedral in September 2016.

The newly built St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral, whose construction began in November 2012, will replace St. Mary’s Parish Cathedral which was damaged by a series of earthquakes in 2009 and early 2010.

According to Fr Joseph Sikwese the Karonga diocese spokesman, the Church was a dangerous death trap.

Archbishop Julio Murat the Apostolic Nuncio to Malawi and Zambia, Archbishop Tarcisius Ziyaye of Lilongwe, Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa of Blantyre, Bishop Martin Mtumbuka of Karonga Diocese and Secretary General for the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), Fr Henry Saindi were among the church leaders who welcomed Cardinal Filoni to Malawi.
