JUBA APRIL 1, 2016 – South Sudan’s Women’s Monthly Forum Group on March 31 urged conflicting parties to accelerate the implementation of August agreement to enable peace reign in the country.
“The women of South Sudan are disappointed and frustrated by the slow pace at which the peace agreement, signed last August by warring parties, is being implemented,” Betty Ben the Cordinator of the group told Radio Bakhita.
“The situation in South Sudan is getting worse and opposing parties to the agreement are not doing enough to implement the deal,” added Betty Ben.
The women group is also seeking ways to make sure that South Sudan women are conversant with the details of the Peace Accord, she added.
“It is only in doing so that the women, as South Sudanese citizens, would own and buy into the August agreement,” she said.
According to the UN, thousands of people have been killed since conflict erupted in December 2013, for 20 months after a power struggle between Machar rebels and President Kiir’s government forces. The situation has pitted President Kiir’s ethnic group of Dinka against Machar’s group—Nuer.
About 2 million of the 11 million population, have also fled their homes to neighbouring states.
The international community has accused both South Sudan government under President Kiir, and Rebel leader Machar of procrastination in implementing the peace accord despite assurance by both parties.
The warring parties insist they are committed to the peace deal in spite of not adhering to strict deadlines and the terms of the accord.
