ORAN, OCTOBER 27,2023 (CISA)-Pope Francis has appointed Fr Davide Carraro (PIME), a member of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions as the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Oran, Algeria, ending a two-year vacancy at the see.
Until his appointment on October 22, the bishop-elect was the Vicar General of the Catholic Archdiocese of Alger.
He was born on January 26, 1977, in Sambughé, in the Catholic Diocese of Treviso in Italy, studied philosophy in Italy and theology in the Philippines, and was ordained a priest on May 27, 2006 by Bishop Andrea Bruno Mazzocato of Treviso, Italy.
As a priest, he held the roles of envoy in Algeria in 2006 and missionary in the diocese of Laghouat from 2007 to 2008 and later from 2017-2019.
The bishop-elect undertook studies in classical Arabic in Egypt from 2008 to 2011. Thereafter he served as a missionary in Cote d’Ivoire between 2012 and 2017.
Since 2019, he served as a missionary in the Catholic Archdiocese of Alger and assented to the position of vicar general, a position he has held since 2022. He was and local referent for the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions in Algeria and Tunisia.
