UGANDA: Pope Appoints Rector of Uganda Martyrs’ National Major Seminary, Constantine Rupiny, Bishop of Nebbi Diocese

VATICAN CITY, NOVEMBER 26, 2024 (CISA)– Pope Francis has appointed Fr Dr Constantine Rupiny, currently Rector of the Uganda Martyrs’ National Major Seminary of Alokolum in the Catholic Archdiocese of Gulu, as the new Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nebbi, the Holy See Press office announced on November 26, 2024.

Bishop-elect Rupiny, a native of Parombo in the Catholic Diocese of Nebbi, will become the fifth bishop of the diocese upon his installation.

The diocese of Nebbi has been vacant since March 22, 2024, when Most Rev. Raphael p’Mony Wokorach, MCCJ, the then bishop of Nebbi, was elevated to the rank of Archbishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Gulu.

Born on November 10, 1974, Msgr Rupiny has dedicated his life to ministry. He completed his philosophical studies at the Uganda Martyrs’ National Major Seminary of Alokolum, in the Archdiocese of Gulu (1996-1999), and his theological studies at St. Mary’s National Major Seminary of Ggaba, in the Archdiocese of Kampala (2000-2004).

He was ordained a priest on August 28, 2004. Following his ordination, he pursued higher studies, earning a Licentiate in Philosophy from the Pontifical Urbaniana University of Rome (2009-2011) and a Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology from Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw, Poland 2018-2022).

Bishop-elect Rupiny’s pastoral and academic contributions include serving as a parish vicar in Kango (2004-2005), parish priest of Akanyo (2005-2007), and an esteemed formator and professor at the Uganda Martyrs’ National Major Seminary of Alokolum (2007-2009, and 2011-2018).

His leadership roles have been equally notable, having served as Vice President of the Presbyteral Council of Nebbi (2017-2018), Vice Rector (January-September 2023), and most recently, Rector of the Alokolum seminary.
