JUBA, NOVEMBER 26, 2024 (CISA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit on November 25, met with a delegation of Catholic Bishops from South Sudan and Sudan to discuss critical issues surrounding national peace, reconciliation, and regional stability.
This meeting came in the wake of the successful celebration of the Eucharistic Congress and the Golden Jubilee of the Catholic Church in South Sudan and Sudan on November 24.
The delegation, led by His Eminence Cardinal Stephen Ameyu, seized the opportunity to emphasize the importance of peace and unity for South Sudan’s future. Cardinal Ameyu appealed to the government to prioritize efforts aimed at fostering a harmonious society, stressing the urgent need for decisive action to ensure the country remains a peaceful and secure environment for all citizens.
“We have known that the President is a man of peace,” said Cardinal Stephen, noting “He briefed us about the Tumaini peace initiative and informed us that the government team is set to travel to Nairobi to negotiate and bring lasting peace to the country.”
In response, President Kiir acknowledged the bishops’ concerns and reassured them of his commitment to peace. He emphasized the administration’s resolve to address the ongoing challenges facing South Sudan and ensure that peace remains a central focus of his government’s agenda.
During the meeting, the two sides also addressed the escalating crisis in neighbouring Sudan, where conflict between warring generals has led to widespread devastation. Both President Kiir and the Catholic Bishops called for an immediate end to the violence, urging all parties in Sudan to seek a durable peace.
The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between the Church and the government in securing a peaceful, non-violent future for the South Sudanese people. As the country moves forward in its pursuit of peace, the Church’s voice and influence remain pivotal in shaping a cohesive and stable society.
