NAIROBI, JANUARY 28, 2025 (CISA) – The Africa Christian Professionals Forum (ACPF) has issued a strong condemnation of the escalating violence in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and renewed efforts for peace. The conflict, marked by the resurgence of the M23 rebel group, has displaced over 400,000 people and created a dire humanitarian crisis in the region.
In a press statement released on January 28, ACPF decried the widespread destruction and tragic loss of life caused by the conflict. They emphasized the need for urgent dialogue to alleviate civilian suffering, citing overwhelming pressures on hospitals, lack of basic necessities, and the growing threat of cholera outbreaks.
The organization highlighted the gravity of the situation following the death of Major General Peter Cirimwami Nkuba, North Kivu’s military governor, stating the ongoing instability has further heightened regional tensions, prompting calls for decisive action.
ACPF outlined a set of key demands to address the crisis. These include an immediate ceasefire to protect civilians and allow space for dialogue, safe corridors for humanitarian aid delivery, and regional accountability. The organization specifically called on neighbouring nations, particularly Rwanda, to respect the DRC’s sovereignty and halt any support for rebel forces. They also urged global actors, including the United Nations and African Union, to intensify their diplomatic and humanitarian efforts.
Furthermore, ACPF stressed the need for long-term solutions that tackle the root causes of the conflict, such as governance challenges, economic disparities, and ethnic tensions.
The organization commended ongoing peace efforts spearheaded by the East African Community (EAC) and urged other stakeholders to rally behind these initiatives. They also appealed to global leaders to honour international frameworks such as the United Nations Charter, the African Union Constitutive Act, and the Geneva Conventions to uphold peace and territorial sovereignty in the DRC.
The African Union (AU) has been urged to take a leading role in mediating the conflict, enforcing accountability, and ensuring respect for human rights and sovereignty in the region. International actors, including the United Nations, face mounting pressure to step up their involvement in both diplomatic and humanitarian initiatives.
Since 2021, the resurgence of the M23 rebel group has exacerbated long-standing tensions in the region, stemming from unresolved issues of governance, resource allocation, and external interference.
ACPF appealed to faith-based organizations, churches, and the global community to unite in prayer for the people of Goma. They expressed hope for renewed dialogue and lasting peace, underscoring the resilience and faith of the Congolese people.
As the situation in eastern DRC continues to unfold, the world watches closely, with increasing pressure on regional and global actors to address the growing humanitarian crisis and create a pathway for sustainable peace.
