VATICAN, APRIL 21, 2025 (CISA) – The world mourns the passing of Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope in history, who died peacefully on Easter Monday at the age of 88. His death was announced at 9:45 AM by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, at the Casa Santa Marta. In a poignant statement, Cardinal Farrell conveyed the profound sorrow of the Church, noting that Pope Francis “returned to the house of the Father” at 7:35 AM that morning.

Pope Francis’s nearly twelve-year papacy was marked by transformative reforms and a spirit of inclusivity. He championed a more compassionate approach to leadership, often challenging traditional hierarchical structures in favor of pastoral care and accessibility. His commitment to making the Church a place of welcome and mercy earned him admiration from both within and beyond the Catholic community.

Throughout his time as pope, Francis placed a strong emphasis on social justice and environmental stewardship. He persistently advocated for the rights of the poor, refugees, and the vulnerable, calling on global leaders to promote a more equitable distribution of wealth and resources. His encyclical Laudato Si’ underscored the moral responsibility to care for creation and protect the planet for future generations.

Pope Francis’s voice for the marginalized resonated across the world. His unwavering dedication to the poor and his calls for a more merciful Church elevated him as a global moral leader. He inspired millions with his message of universal love and compassion, challenging both clergy and laity to live out the Gospel with courage and fidelity.

The death of Pope Francis marks the end of a significant chapter in the history of the Catholic Church. His legacy will be remembered not only for the spiritual and structural reforms he initiated but also for his profound influence on global conversations around justice, peace, and care for the vulnerable. As the process of electing his successor begins, the Church enters a period of reflection and transition. Though his passing leaves a deep void, the impact of his life and teachings will continue to inspire generations to come.
