SOUTH AFRICA: Pope Appoints Fr Kwenzakufani Zondi Auxiliary Bishop of Durban

DURBAN, MARCH 10,2023 (CISA)Rev Fr Elias Kwenzakufani Zondi, the Vicar General of the Catholic Archdiocese of Durban has been appointed the auxiliary bishop of the same archdiocese and assigned the titular see of Rutabo.

In an announcement made by the Holy See Press Office on March 9, the parish priest of St. James Parish-Lamontville, Kwazulu-Natal upon his ordination as a bishop will assist Archbishop Siegfried Mandla Jwara, C.M.M., in meeting the pastoral and administrative needs of the archdioceses of Durban.

Fr Zondi was born on December 24, 1963. After attending the St. Paul Preparatory Seminary in Hammanskraal, he entered the St. Peter Philosophical Seminary of Garsfontein, and subsequently the theological seminary of St. John Vianney in Pretoria, where he was awarded a bachelor’s degree.

He was ordained a priest on July 16, 1994, for the Catholic Archdiocese of Durban.

He has held the following offices: parish vicar of Christ the King in Wentworth from 1994 to 1995; parish priest of St. James in Mooi River from1996 to 2000; parish priest of KwaKristo Umsindisi and Our Lady of Lourdes from 2001 to 2015; since 2016, parish priest of St. James in Lamontville; and since 2021, vicar general of the archdiocese of Durban.
