VATICAN CITY, JULY 2, 2024 (CISA) – Blessed Joseph Allamano, the founder of Consolata Missionaries and the Consolata Missionary Sisters will be proclaimed a saint on October 20, 2024, in Rome.
The news of the approval of his canonization and announcement of the date was made by the Holy See Press Office on July 1, after Pope Francis presided over the celebration of the Hour of Terce and the Ordinary Public Consistory of the Blessed Joseph Allamano and 15 other Blesseds. The pope with the unanimous agreement of the Cardinals as representatives of the Universal Church, declared that they could proceed with the canonization of those presented.
The other Blesseds whom the Holy Father decreed to be registered in the Register of Saints include the Blessed Manuel Ruiz López and seven companions, Francesco, Mooti and Raffaele Massabki, Marie-Léonie Paradis and Elena Guerra while the Blessed Carlo Acutis, the first-millennial to be made saint will be registered on a date to be determined.
The Ordinary Public Consistory of Cardinals to approve the canonization of various persons being considered for sainthood was held at the Consistory Hall of the Vatican Apostolic Palace.
On May 23, Pope Francis issued a decree approving a miracle attributed to Blessed Allamano after a meeting with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.
The miracle attributed to Blessed Allamano involves the extraordinary healing of Sorino Yanomami, an indigenous man from the Yanomami tribe in northern Brazil. On February 7, 1996, Sorino was attacked by a jaguar in Catrimani, in the Brazilian Amazonia forest, suffering severe injuries, including partial exposure of his brain. Despite the life-threatening nature of his wounds, Sorino survived after undergoing surgery in Boa Vista, Brazil.
Blessed Joseph Allamano was born in 1851 and died in 1926. He dedicated his life to missionary work through the missionaries he sent all over the world to spread the gospel. Born in Castelnuovo d’Asti, Italy, Allamano founded the Consolata Missionaries in 1901 with the first missionaries arriving in Kenya in 1902 and the Consolata Missionary Sisters in 1910.
He was beatified on October 7, 1990, by St. Pope John Paul II. The pope confirmed the tributes the new blessed had received during his life and after his death: “The Consolata Saint”, “Provident Father”, “Formator and Teacher of the Clergy”, and “A priest for the whole world”.
During the homily he delivered at the beatification, Pope John Paul II said, “At this moment when his name is added to the list of the Blessed, Joseph Allamano reminds us that, to be faithful to our Christian vocation, we must share the gifts we have received from God with brothers and sisters from every race and culture. We must proclaim Christ with courage and coherence to everyone we encounter, and especially to those who do not yet know Him”.
