RUMBEK, MARCH 2, 2021 (CISA) – Fr Christian Carlassare, the bishop-elect of Rumbek, South Sudan, will finally be consecrated as bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek nearly a year after surviving an attempt on his life.
“After due consultation with the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan and the Bishop elect , I am happy to announce to you the consecration of Bishop of Rumbek. The consecration of bishop elect Fr Christian Carlassare will take place on the solemnity of the annunciation of the Lord, 25th, March 2022 in Rumbek,” announced Rt Rev Mathew Remijio, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Wau and Apostolic Administrator of the diocese of Rumbek on March 1.
Bishop-elect Carlassare, a member of the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus (MCCJ), was appointed on March 8, 2021 and his Episcopal Ordination scheduled for Pentecost Sunday, May 23, 2021, but it was postponed as the investigation into his attack continued.
In an unclear circumstances as to the intentions of the attack, Fr Carlassare was shot in both legs on April 26, 2021, at his residence in Catholic Diocese of Rumbek and was flown to Nairobi, Kenya for treatment and later taken to Italy for further medical attention.
Bishop Remijio in his announcement urged the faithful to “… accompany him with our prayers,” and wished for a good preparation of the occasion as the Lenten period starts.
