WADI AL RAYAN FEBRUARY 21, 2017 (CISA) – Dispute between church leaders and the Egyptian government over land belonging to the Coptic Orthodox Monastery of St. Macarius is yet to find an amicable solution.
The dispute stems from the governments plan of building a road that passes through the church’s location, linking the town of Fayyum to an oasis area.
Ihab Ramzy, the lawyer defending the Coptic Orthodox Church, had announced in June 2016 that an agreement between the two parties had been established,reported Fides.
However the lawyer recently announced that the ad hoc committee that was put in place to evaluate how the church would be compensated has not offered useful suggestions to materialize the deal.
The opposition from the church that began in early 2015 by the monks of St. Macarius sought to protect other things along with the church.
An archaeological center that dates back to the fourth century, the church’s water supply and some cultivated lands are also at risk of being done away with, yet they play a significant role to the community.
